The Coronavirus has sucked the air out of the room. Inboxes are jammed. Does that mean that you, as a business leader, should go silent?
It depends. Thoughtful
leaders add value, not noise. And there is a ton of noise out there. Yet in the
meantime, your clients and colleagues are uncertain, frightened, freaked out,
or a combination. You don’t want to be just another voice piling on. But now
may be an opportunity to help keep clients grounded.
Your goal is to communicate
with clarity and calm, at the right time, some of the following:
- We are open for business
- We care about you
- We are here for you
- Here’s how things look in our corner of the world for now
- Here’s what we look forward to when this storm has passed
- Contact us at anytime
The best leaders are
sensitive to the times and the impact on human lives. But overcorrecting by
dialing back messages that are emotionally reassuring or purpose-driven could
be a mistake.
I never advise communicating for the sake of communicating. But you also don’t want to leave clients – or messaging — in a vacuum.
I’m happy to discuss this with you. Until then, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay connected to your loved ones. We all need to be here for one another.
